Optimising Fibre Quality

Fibre quality is difficult to measure accurately and its effect on MDF properties not always clear. Overall the benefit of using fibre from chip is clear with lower resin levels required where this raw material is used.

The situation is more complex when sawdust or shavings are used. In this case the average fibre length is reduced as a greater proportion of fibres are damaged in the processes that generate the residue streams.

MDF Tech Ltd has developed a method of determining a theoretical fibre length for any blend of raw material, allowing the actual fibre length to be compared with this. It provides a method of determining the effect of different refiner operating strategies on average fibre length and comparing this with a theoretical maximum length for the particular raw material blend.
